Ecuador produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 World Cup group stage by coming from behind to beat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the knockout rounds.
Plata completes Ecuador’s comeback
Gonzalo Plata became the decisive figure for Ecuador with the winning goal in the 77th minute. The move began from a Pedro Vite corner, with Kevin Rodriguez helping the ball on before Plata reacted quickest inside the box and poked it past Manuel Neuer.
The goal punished a rare hesitation from the veteran German goalkeeper, who came out to claim the delivery but arrived a fraction too late. For Ecuador, it was the moment that turned a brave performance into a historic result.

Germany started fast, but Ecuador hit back immediately
Germany had already secured top spot in Group E after winning their first two matches, and they appeared to be on course for another comfortable night when Leroy Sane opened the scoring in the second minute.
Ecuador, however, refused to fold. Nilson Angulo equalised in the ninth minute, giving the South American side their first goal of this World Cup and shifting the momentum of the match. From there, Ecuador grew in confidence and made Germany work for every possession.

Warning signs for Neuer and Germany’s defence
The defeat also highlighted a growing concern for Germany. Neuer has now conceded four goals at the tournament, more than the number of saves he has made. Germany have also conceded in nine consecutive World Cup matches, equalling their longest run without a clean sheet at the finals.
While Germany still advance as group winners, the result brings an end to their 11-match winning streak and leaves head coach and players with defensive questions to answer before the round of 32.
Group E finishes with three qualifiers
Ecuador finished third in Group E with four points, behind Germany and Ivory Coast, but that total was enough to guarantee progression as one of the best third-placed teams. It is only the second time Ecuador have reached the knockout stage of a World Cup, following their run in 2006.
In the other Group E match, Ivory Coast beat Curaçao 2-0 thanks to a Nicolas Pepe double, earning a first-ever World Cup knockout place for the African side.

What comes next?
Germany are expected to face one of Paraguay, Australia or Sweden in the round of 32. Ecuador, meanwhile, will enter the knockout stage with renewed belief after beating a European opponent in a major competitive tournament for the first time since 2013.
For a team that started the night needing a statement, Ecuador delivered exactly that — a comeback, a famous win and a ticket to the next round.
